About the Library

The UL ALUO Library is a higher education library, primarily for the needs of UL ALUO students, professors and researchers in their studies, pedagogical and research work.

The library has two locations:

  • The Central Library on Erjavčeva cesta systematically and continuously collects material from painting, sculpture, video, graphics, conservation-restoration and art theory.
  • The Library of the Departments of Design on Dolenjska cesta specialises in graphic, industrial and unique design, illustration and photography.

In total, the library holds more than 37,000 units of library material, of which more than 60 are titles of ongoing serial publications.

The initial donation was accepted by the library from the Federal Collection Centre. The first entry in the inventory book was made on 1 June 1946. The exact number of books accepted is difficult to determine because the donor is not consistently recorded in the inventory book, but there are about 400 book units. ALU moved to the current premises at Erjavčeva cesta 23 in 1959, at the same time as the library, which received its premises on the third floor, where it is still located today. Lectures on art history and other theoretical subjects have also been held in the library for a long time. In 1985, the Department of Design was established and received its premises on Dolenjska cesta 83. At that time, literature in the field of design was transferred to the Library of the Department of Design.

The UL ALUO library has a classic (paper system 1996) alphabetical catalogue of authors, writers and artists, a password catalogue and a UDK signature catalogue. Until 1996, all articles in journals were also treated separately. The library has been included in the COBISS system since 1994.

Due to its rarity, value and for convenience, a large part of the material is intended only for reading and reviewing in the reading room or in the studios of the UL ALUO. Most of the material is freely available and is organised in accordance with the UDK system. Diploma, master’s and doctoral theses can only be viewed in the reading room or be taken home with the prior written consent of the author.
