Third-cycle Doctoral degree programmes offered by the UL ALUO
In the field of scientific research, UL ALUO runs an interdisciplinary doctoral study programme in Humanities and Social Sciences, organised by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana. In the field of research in the arts, UL ALUO coordinates the interdisciplinary doctoral study programme Art, which is implemented jointly with the Academy of Music, the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television, the Faculty of Biotechnology, the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering of the University of Ljubljana.
Both doctoral programmes are third cycle programmes under the Bologna scheme and last 4 years. The study programmes consist of organised lectures and seminars of 60 credits, with the remaining 180 credits dedicated to individual research work for the doctoral dissertation.
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme in Humanities and Social Sciences provides the opportunity to obtain the academic title of Doctor of Science in various scientific fields. The field coordinated by the UL ALUO is FINE ART STUDIES.
The interdisciplinary doctoral programme Art provides the opportunity to obtain the title of Doctor of Arts in various artistic fields. The fields coordinated by UL ALUO are FINE ARTS and DESIGN.
What entry requirements do we have?
The doctoral programme in the Humanities and Social Sciences is open for the enrolment of graduates from at least second-cycle study programmes or equivalent or higher as specified by the Higher Education Act, acquired in accordance with previous regulations in the Republic of Slovenia or abroad. Candidates must also meet other conditions for enrolment, which are listed in each programme separately.
Candidates are particularly reminded that any additional obligations (in accordance with the conditions for enrolment specified in the announced doctoral degree program) must be completed before enrolment in the programme.

Information day for the doctoral programme in the Humanities and Social Sciences, study field Fine Art Studies, will be organised on 7 June 2023.
Candidates must complete and submit the application for enrolment in the doctoral degree programmes and all the evidence required for the application electronically via the eVŠ information system. More detailed instructions for completing the application for enrolment are also published on this website.
Candidates with foreign educational documents proving the fulfilment of enrolment conditions, with the same application for enrolment through the eVŠ information system, also submit an application for recognition of foreign education for the purpose of continuing education at the University of Ljubljana and all required evidence and attachments. Fee per programme is €10,600.00. Fee per study year:
- 1st year: €3,400.00
- 2nd year: €2,600.00
- 3rd year: €2,200.00
- 4th year: €2,400.00
The co-financing of publicly valid doctoral study programs is regulated by the Decree on the co-financing of doctoral studies (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 22/17) and the amendment to the Higher Education Act.
