Tactics & Practice #12, Strand 2: Vladan Joler and Anatomies of a Black Box

On Wednesday 16 March 2022, the 2nd part of the transdisciplinary programme Tactics & Practice #12: The New Extractivism will start. The project will take place between January and June 2022 under the auspices of Aksioma – Institute for Contemporary Art, Cukrarna Gallery, konS ≡ the Platform for Contemporary Investigative Arts and Academy of Fine Arts and Design, UL.

The meeting will feature a presentation by academic, researcher and artist Vladan Joler, whose work blends data investigations, counter-cartography, investigative journalism, writing, data visualisation, critical design, and numerous other disciplines. He will present his latest work – the cartographic project New Extractivism: based on the enclosure of biodiversity and knowledge and the privatization of cultural commons, the New Extractivism occurs when different fields of human knowing, feeling, action and every form of biodata – including forensic, biometric, sociometric and psychometric – are regarded as raw materials, a new gold to be excavated and used to feed databases for machine learning and AI training.

The workshop will take place in the Video, Animation and New Media course and is primarily aimed at art and design students.

Takeaways:
In the process, participants find new lenses to focus on invisible phenomena or, on the contrary, zoom out and plot a whole new cosmo-technological cartography. Mapping is to be explored as a form of non-linear poetry or storytelling, where both technical tools (such as network graphs, metadata analysis, patent investigations, interface scraping) and a conceptual approach (assemblages, maps of errors, approximations, biases, faults, fallacies, vulnerabilities, etc.) are necessary.
