Zmago Ledárdič was born in 1959 in Ljubljana. In 1979–1984 he studied philosophy and sociology at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana, and after his graduation in sociology, he also studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. In 1988 he won the Student Prešeren Award. In 1989 he was admitted to the Association of Slovenian Visual Artists. In the same year he started to work as a member of the Glej Experimental Theatre and as a co-founder of the Galerija GT Society. For a short time he taught at the Arrangement Secondary School in Ljubljana. In 1992 he won a DAAD grant of Atelierhaus Worpswede, Worpswede. In the 15-year period of freelancing in the area of culture at home and abroad, he won several professional awards, represented Slovenia in the international arena, participating at symposiums, in cultural capitals (Kopenhagen) and artist residencies (Worpswede, Kleinsassen, New York, Düsseldorf) and, above all, created works of art that elude the existing and known paradigmatic patterns of the domestic art scene. Since 2003 he has been employed at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, working as an associate professor at the Department for Painting. In 2004 the City of Ljubljana presented him with the Župančič Award for outstanding achievements in culture; in 2012 he also won the Jakopič Award.
